Hot-dip galvanizing is becoming increasingly popular in comparison with painting. The main reasons are more quality and more durable corrosion protection and cost and environmental acceptability. Hot-dip galvanizing, as a manner of corrosion protection also has many other advantages in comparison with painting.
Awareness about the advantages of hot-dip galvanizing as a manner of corrosion protection in Slovenia is increasing, but it is still low in comparison to the Western Europe. In Europe, nearly 7 million tons of steel are galvanized each year.
Galvanized steel gives no doubt about the quality of protection, because inappropriately prepared steel surface cannot be successfully coated with zinc. Paint and other coatings can cover the steel despite the badly prepared surface, but this can lead to quick decay of the material. Another important advantage of galvanizing is the internal protection of hollow constructions, which cannot be achieved with painting.
An important fact from the environmental protection point of view is, that hot-dip galvanized coating does not require any additional maintenance, while quality painted coatings in average need to be repaired after ten years, and subsequently even more often.
The modern technology of hot-dip galvanizing assures a more environmentally acceptable procedure, because all emissions from the zinc bath and the chemical pretreatment chambers are filtered through a dry filter for white vapors and a scrubber for acid fumes. The flow of the used chemicals is completely self-contained; we operate without any water discharge into the watercourses and sewer system. The workers also do not operate in areas with emissions’ sources.
